It’s Not Just Porn: How “Innocent” Media Shapes Our Children, Article 1/2
by A Well-Wisher
We live in a world that is filled with content. Books, movies, music, tv, every social media outlet imaginable – in the world today, content is inescapable.
But do we ever stop to ask ourselves what the content we consume is actually saying? Do we pause long enough to think critically about the messages our brains are automatically retaining?
Because hear me out when I say this: everything has a message.
The makers of the content you consume have a motive. And these motives can honor and elevate the dignity of ourselves and others – or destroy it.
How often do we pause to think about that?
I’m guessing your answer is the same as mine: not enough.
Here are some practical methods for engaging with media content in the world today with dignity.
Think Critically About What you See
The word “critical” can sound like a negative word that is offensive to polite society. However, the word is anything but negative. Critical thinking is used to make judgements regarding value. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines critical as “exercising or involving careful judgement or judicial evaluation.”
To think critically about something is to make a judgement about it; in this case (judging media content), to judge whether it honors human dignity or degrades it.
